Hannah and Sophia of the TH's admitted in the bar that they were crapping it before they went on stage, but they didn't show it - producing a well-chosen selection of songs from their normal set with just mandolin and Sophia's stunning guitar work. The crowd who were here for the real bluegrass deal lapped them up and Stewart, their dad, on the merchandise desk got through several boxes of CDs. The TH's just need the right break - they're good and the fact that Ricky Skaggs applauded them at their sound-check can't have done them much harm.
Next up was Lucy Diamond - the less said about her the better. Absolutely dire beyond belief, but somebody obviously thinks she has talent, as she name-checked several Nashville names who'd played on her CD...after every song...she'll probably be on CMT, if not already. Warbly Mariah Carey-esque crap and she was completely up her own ego. Loathesome. ..which was the total antithesis of Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder. Not only did they play two of my all time favourite bluegrass songs ("Old Home Place" and "Rank Stranger") but they did a selection of Bill Monroe songs to die for from a forthcoming tribute to 60 years of bluegrass, plus a Louvin Brothers cover and loads and loads of other absolutely divine stuff. Two hours later it all ends with "Rolling in my sweet baby's arms" Awesome.
