Amy Rigby
The Maze at Cabaret, Nottingham    view map
08 December 2005

An hour to drive to Nottingham and 45 minutes driving around trying to find a parking space and the well-hidden venue - mate Paul, who's lived in Nottingham all his life and is supposed to be meeting me at the venue rings me up and asks where the gig is...it's that well hidden. When I do find the place, the bouncer on the upstairs door tries to send me into a Christmas party featuring several drag artists. I decline and head downstairs hurriedly to catch most of Luke Doucet's set - pleasant, occasionally catchy rootsy pop. I have memories of seeing Luke before, playing guitar for Suzy Ungerleider in Oh Susanna.

Amy Rigby is a treat - she has a scratch band featuring various London-based musicians who give lots of verve and enthusiasm to what would be Amy Rigby's greatest hits, if there were such a thing. At first, the sit down venue and quiet, yet receptive audience seems to stall her natural cheek, but she soon gets down to it. An acoustic interlude featuring a fine version of "Cynically yours" plays directly into the hands of the 30+ plus something audience - then it's back for "a couple of songs written from the male perspective" - Wreckless Eric's "Whole Wide World" and AR's own "I hate every bone in your body, but mine" - a fine addition to the canon of country songtitles. I'd say that Amy Rigby was my most pleasing "new" discovery of 2005 - live, she didn't let me down. She also managed to scrape the wrapper off the CD I bought, quite valiantly too.
